The short version
ProgrammerNeeds uses the information needed to operate a moderated product directory, authenticate members, publish approved contributions, measure listing activity, prevent abuse, and respond to messages. We do not sell or rent personal information.
Section 01
Information we collect
We collect information from you, from the sign-in provider you choose, and automatically when the service is used.
Information you provide
- Account and profile data: email address, username, display name, avatar, account identifier, and role.
- Product data: product names, descriptions, categories, tags, pricing, links, logos, screenshots, demo links, and moderation history.
- Community activity: votes, ratings, reviews, and reports.
- Messages: your name, email address, subject, message, and anything else you include when contacting us.
Information from sign-in providers
If you sign in with Google or GitHub, that provider sends us information allowed by your settings and the authorization screen, such as your provider account ID, email, name, username, and avatar. We do not receive your Google or GitHub password.
Information collected automatically
- Listing activity: impressions, product-page views, outbound clicks, timestamps, and the relevant product.
- Technical and security data: IP address and request information used for security, fraud prevention, rate limiting, and service logs. For first-party listing analytics, we convert an IP address into a shortened one-way hash rather than storing the raw address with the event.
- Usage data: when Google Analytics is enabled, page interactions, session statistics, approximate location, and browser or device information.

How we use information
We use information to:
- create and secure accounts, maintain sessions, and provide account features;
- review, publish, rank, update, archive, and remove product listings;
- display approved profiles, listings, and reviews;
- record votes, moderate contributions, investigate reports, and prevent misuse;
- give makers aggregate impression, page-view, and outbound-click analytics;
- respond to support, moderation, partnership, and other inquiries;
- operate, troubleshoot, secure, and improve the service; and
- comply with law and enforce our policies.
Where law requires a legal basis, we process data to provide the service you request, for our legitimate interests in operating and protecting the directory, with consent where requested, and to comply with legal obligations.
Section 05
Public content
ProgrammerNeeds is a public directory. Approved product information, media, usernames, ratings, and review text may be visible to anyone and indexed by search engines. A maker can hide maker attribution on a listing, but that does not make the product private.
Votes contribute to public totals and rankings, but individual voting records are not displayed publicly. Reports and reporter identities are limited to the reporter and authorized moderators, except when disclosure is required for legal or safety reasons.
Do not put sensitive personal information in a listing, review, username, image, or other field intended for publication.
Section 06
Retention and security
We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary to provide and secure the service, maintain moderation and business records, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. The period depends on the data and its purpose. Account data is generally kept while an account is active; public content may remain until removed, archived, or deleted; and security, backup, moderation, legal, and contact records may be kept for a reasonable period when needed.
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards, including access controls, server-side validation, restricted credentials, and encrypted network connections. No online system can guarantee absolute security.

Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or receive a portable copy of personal data, and to object to or withdraw consent for some processing.
- Edit or delete eligible product information from your dashboard.
- Sign out and manage OAuth access through Google or GitHub.
- Control cookies in your browser and opt out of Google Analytics as described above.
- Request account or personal-data assistance by emailing us.
We may verify your identity before acting on a request. A request may be limited where law permits, including to protect others, preserve security records, or meet legal obligations. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
Section 08
International processing
ProgrammerNeeds and its providers may process data outside your country. Those locations may have different privacy laws. Where required, we rely on contractual or other recognized safeguards for international transfers.
Section 09
Children's privacy
ProgrammerNeeds is a general-audience product-discovery service and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided it, contact us so we can review and delete it as appropriate.
Section 10
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our service, practices, or legal requirements change. We will post the revised policy here and update the date above. We will provide additional notice when a change materially affects how we use personal information, when appropriate.
